Sweater Genius #5: Bonnie Cashin
Bonnie Cashin was an artist who just happened to use apparel – and especially fine knitwear – as her medium. In addition to her legendary output of handbags, outerwear and leatherwork, she was equally revered for her graphic sweaters – most of which were made of cashmere by some of the world’s most historic Scottish manufacturers. Her colour sense was extraordinary, at once both wild and sophisticated. Her painted layouts of her sweaters show what an eye she had, how specific she was, and how distinctive and yet simple her approach was. Timeless knitwear.
