The Power Of Print

Josef Frank

Here we pay homage to a giant of print and pattern – the inimitable, ultra-talented polyglot – Austrian architect Josef Frank. A successful architect and brilliant furniture designer, he is most celebrated for the body of work he created for his dear friend Estrid Ericson of Svenkst Tenn in Stockholm – an enormous collection of extraordinary printed fabrics used primarily for home furnishings. To this day there is nothing remotely like them – dream-like botanical fantasies and graphic abstractions in startlingly original colour combinations. The designs were entirely hand painted by him, and he personally worked out the repeat of each pattern with scientific precision. They are breathtaking. Still. What a visionary.
