Thai Phra Pidta Amulets
- One of our favourite amulet forms is the Phra Pidta from Thailand. These diminutive beauties are made of “holy powder”, often embedded with a touch of metal, and depict a monk (phra) sitting in full or half lotus position with his hands covering his closed eyes (pidta). He is deep in meditation, shutting out the world, determined to find inner peace. It is reputed to make one’s mind more focused, to protect against worldly temptations. One legend has it that it shields the owner from others who may bad-mouth him. It is said that it will attract wealth. Also it is meant to protect against danger, theft, weapons, black magic and more. That’s a heavy burden for such a little amulet! For us, it is unbelievably modern-looking – chunky, graphic, tactile. Simply super cool. Vintage artisan finds from our cabinet of curiosities. No two alike.
